Christian Witch?

The Witch. . . Witch n. A person believed to have magical powers; a mean, ugly, old woman. According to Webster's Dictionary, this is the definition of a witch. But, here I am, a witch. I happen to be a very loving mother and generous community giver, so I know I am not mean. I believe I am rather attractive, so I'm not ugly. As I am only in my mid-twenty’s, I know I'm not old. So, when I say I'm a witch, you have to understand the real meaning of the word "witch". I don’t mean the ugly green woman with the long bent nose that society and entertainment have 1 portrayed and I don't mean that I'm a cat-sacrificing- Satan-worshipper. There are many misconceptions regarding the witch. I don't use evil forces or demons to do my biddings. In fact I don’t use evil forces at all. The word witch comes from the word “Wicce” (pronounced witch-eee) meaning a practitioner of the Old Religion1. A witch seeks to control the forces within his or herself, without harming others and within harmony with Nature. The witch is attuned with the flow of nature. Paganism is exactly that; a Nature-based religion. But in a way I am a slight oxymoron, for I am not only a witch, I am a Christian witch, or Christo-pagan. I can see you eyes clouding over in disbelief already. "A Christian witch?" "What kind of bull is that?" I can hear you saying. Just give me the benefit of a doubt, open your mind, and click through this site first. Deal? My mother had always encouraged me to think for myself and question everything. She also introduced to a wide variety of beliefs and religion. About a three years ago I started looking into Pagan/Wiccan beliefs and practices in an attempt to find my place in the world spiritually. I had to find a belief that fit me. The power of the moon had spoken to me. I began to remember being a small child and always looking at her in all her different aspects. Full, half, orange, white. . . I recalled being mesmerized. Upon learning that the moon was what made the tides roll in and out put me in a state of awe at her power. Then I realized that God the Mother had always been there in my life. But still I knew with all the beauty that I saw; I knew that female alone could not make a universe, nor could male, as I was reared to believe in Sunday school. There are two—male & female—woman & man. When a child is born it has a mother and father. I believed that all the children on the earth and the earth itself were no different. Many people may say that Christianity and Paganism cannot mix, not 4 true. Paganism itself it the nature based belief system, not a tradition of it. By tradition I mean the different types of paganism. Examples include Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, or Dianic. Just like with Baptist, Episcopal, and A.M.E. are all denominations of Christianity. Within certain traditions of paganism it may be impossible to also practice Christianity, such as Wicca which is largely Goddess focused and belief that the God and Goddess are separate deities. But within the Christian faith we are taught in the Ten Commandments: “Thou shall put no other God before me.” Exodus 20:3. Christo-paganism does not put any other god before God; it puts his feminine aspect at his side so that we may worship them as our divine parents. So, in essence Christo-Paganism is a modern nature based religion with Christian theology. The differences There, of course, must be more differences from Christo-paganism and Christianity or it would just be called Christianity. Two main ideologies set Christo-paganism from mainstream Christianity. One is the acceptance of magick. Magick2 is "cause and effect by effort and will". Magick plays some role in most religions, though they would not publicly call it 5 so, rather miracles, etc! I embrace magick and recognize that magick is an opportunity to attune with the divine. I perform ritual prayers. Simply put I make praying a formal event. It’s a beautiful and holy way to commune with my divine parents. Another difference is our reverence for Nature. I understand that many people say they love to recycle and have their cars checked for smog, and those things helped the environment. But in paganism there is a natural connection to the earth that you can feel it in your body and spirit. I hold the belief that our planet should be revered and respected as a manifestation of our Divine parents, and that nature embodies all the wonders of the earth that are beyond the scope of the human mind. The earth is a living thing and therefore a gift for us from our Divine Parents and must be respected. I am a practicing conservationists and try to do all I can through daily life and rituals to give the earth every bit of energy I can find to help its struggle for survival in today's harsh environment of pollution and damage. |
